SimPWR Power Distribution Unit for Full Flight Simulators

March 24 , 2009

FlightSafety International installs first full flight simulator powered by TEAL’s SimPWR Power Distribution Units.

Houston, TX (March 26, 2009) — TEAL Electronics, a subsidiary of SL Industries, Inc (AMEX:SLI), is pleased to announce that FlightSafety International has received Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), Level D Qualification on its first full flight simulator powered with the TEAL SimPWR Power Distribution Units. The Hawker 900XP simulator’s high fidelity subsystems, including electric motion, electric control loading, and high definition visual systems are all powered from TEAL SimPWR cabinets. SimPWR cabinets provide the clean electrical power necessary to enable the highest system uptime and performance while reducing or eliminating the problems created by electrical noise and ground loops.

TEAL SimPWR distribution units are self-contained units that provide voltage conversion and distribution, impedance control, high-energy filtering, surge suppression, ethernet control and monitoring, and the TEALwatch® remote power monitoring. SimPWR distribution units are designed around a high performance, high reliability isolation transformer that enables input voltage selection and conversion, integrated into a modular rack mount package with a number of distribution and control options. SimPWR distribution units offer a clean power source protected against common mode noise, transients, and harmonics.

TEAL’s SimPWR was chosen for a variety of reasons, including:

- Modular design - custom distribution modules in the 24” wide rack cabinet enable simple modifications for various simulator subsystems.
- Single point power and grounding eliminates ground loops and provides clean power to noise sensitive systems.
- Patented low-impedance isolation transformer design enables high peak currents during full motion in a compact quiet package. Fully isolated outputs for the motion and control loading systems eliminate noise and coupling.
- Universal input voltage (208VAC to 480VAC), 50/60Hz, allows system to be installed virtually anywhere in the world, and reduces wiring costs.
- System Control Module features the UEI Cube analog and digital I/O system for control and monitoring, including:
- 16 channels of Analog Inputs
- 48 channels of Digital I/O
- 64 channels of Digital Outputs
- TEALwatch® internet based remote power monitor with the capability to display and log waveforms, events and power consumption
- Patented noise and transient filtering and suppression, significantly reducing the possibility of equipment damage.

“TEAL Electronics is very excited that FlightSafety’s newest full flight simulators feature TEAL’s SimPWR cabinets,” said Kevin Harris, Program Manager for the FlightSafety International SimPWR program. “The entire FlightSafety engineering team worked very closely with the entire TEAL team to specify and develop the SimPWR products. It quickly became a very close working relationship, and the end result is a product that has more features and functionality that any typical Power Distribution Unit. The degree of control and monitoring embedded into the SimPWR cabinets will enable FlightSafety to remotely monitor and control nearly all aspects of the AC power source and all the various distributed outputs to each part of their system.”

“The TEAL SimPWR is a key component in our new simulators,” said Ron Jantzen, Director of Engineering, FlightSafety International. “The capabilities and benfits provided by the SimPWR cabinets come as a result of the close working relationship and contributions of the engineering teams from both TEAL and FlightSafety. The modular design of the SimPWR will enable FlightSafety to easily and quickly customize various modules to work specifically with different simulator systems and new aircraft designs, reducing long-term cost and shortening the development lead-time for new simulators.”
