Application Example - Philips Medical Systems - X-Ray
Philips Medical and TEAL Improve Digital X-Ray
Philips Medical Systems is a premier provider of high end computerized X-Ray systems. These systems produce high-resolution digital images, which can be readily processed, retrieved and transmitted. Digital x-ray imaging has also made new diagnostic and interventional techniques possible such as cardiac catheterization.
This sort of image processing power requires high performance computers which are sensitive to power line disturbances. Impulses, high frequency noise and lack of a clean ground reference can cause problems for the microprocessor systems, disrupt equipment function or damage expensive control boards. X-Ray systems also have a built-in power disruptive device: the X-Ray generator. This high power converter creates many disturbances, especially when the hospital has high impedance power or the ground system is substandard.
Philips understands the value of power quality. Their original solution was to evaluate each customer site with an expensive power monitor that would help to characterize the power quality at that location. The site might receive a clean bill of health, but often the site would get a diagnosis of power problems that could affect the equipment being installed. Originally, Philips would address these problems with:
- Full sized ground conductors
- Isolated grounds
- Surge suppressors
- Delta-Wye transformers
- Dedicated feeder from main facility panel
- Power conditioners
Since these problems came up during the equipment installation process, they often caused decreased customer satisfaction. While often effective, the solutions were better suited for an electrical closet rather than a medical suite where appearance, floor space, and environmental concerns were often critical. What Philips needed was a custom, turnkey solution in a small aesthetically pleasing package. TEAL and Philips mapped out the requirements, with low cost, small size, and high power quality being the main drivers for success. TEAL addressed these concerns and custom designed the PDU-6000 for Philips. The PDU-6000 offers Philips these advantages:
- Small Size
- Aesthetically Compatible
- Multiple Outputs
- Easy Installation
- Low Cost
The PDU-6000 has a footprint of only 3 square feet, contains a 150kVA low impedance isolation transformer and can be easily rolled into place by one person. This is truly Site Prep in a Box! More than a thousand PDU-6000's are installed worldwide, protecting Philips R/F rooms from power problems such as impulses, transients and switching noise. The PDU-6000 optimizes image quality and equipment reliability as it reduces service and installation costs.
