TEAL Electronics and Toshiba X-Ray

Modern digital imaging X-Ray systems require clean power and good grounding for optimum performance. Toshiba America Medical Systems (TAMS) identified the need for a comprehensive power quality program for their imaging systems that would communicate equipment requirements and develop power treatment devices. TEAL developed a line of custom Power Conditioning and Distribution Units (PCDU's) for Toshiba, and assisted TAMS in setting up the marketing program. The PCDU includes site prep and power conditioning in a single box. TEAL was chosen by TAMS for the following reasons:

  • TEAL offered a custom solution with fast turnaround time and design flexibility.
  • TEAL was able to carry out the project from design, manufacture, testing and support to the customer.
  • TEAL had an impressive track record in the medical imaging industry
  • TEAL's innovative designs allowed for a small footprint and excellent aesthetics.
  • TEAL designed a solution that met most of the electrical site prep and quality requirements of the Toshiba X-Ray systems.
The advantages realized by TAMS and their customers include:

Power Conditioning

The shielded, ultra low impedance isolation transformer isolates the system from upstream ground quality problems.

The transformer shield protects against ground impulses and noise, while the sine wave tracking filter protects against high frequency noise, voltage impulses and spikes. The surge suppressors protect against slower, higher energy voltage impulses.

Site Preparation

Site prep is greatly simplified and costs are reduced since the PCDU is a one box, mobile solution. Room aesthetics are also improved since the PCDU is housed in a compact, attractive, enclosure that was custom labeled for Toshiba. Wiring costs are reduced significantly since the PCDU accepts a single mains input. From there, various elements (such as table, positioners, digital, etc) receive their specific power requirements. The PCDU contains the distribution breakers needed for each system feed as well as contactors for coordinated control of switched loads. Service personnel find it easier to remove power since all of the system breakers are located in one area.

The Toshiba PCDU is tested and UL Listed certified at the TEAL factory, then drop-shipped to the end user.
