TEAL Electronics and Teradyne ATE application
The Megatest Division of Teradyne, Inc. designs and manufactures extremely fast and highly precise semiconductor test systems. Testing speed and accuracy are crucial and raw power can have a negative effect on testers, potentially costing the end user large sums of money. As computer chips operate at lower voltages with higher densities, their susceptibility to disruption and damage from power disturbances increases.
The Megatest Division turned to TEAL as the vendor of choice for their power interface requirements. Using TEAL eliminated the need to perform incoming inspection of the power interface, saving time and money.
The Polaris logic tester became the proving ground for TEAL. TEAL re-designed the power interface to incorporate a number of changes that added value such as:
- Increased Power Quality from lower impedance, much better filtering and surge suppression
- Smaller footprint
- Easier and faster installation due to easier electrical connections
- An EMO System integrated with the tester
- Safety improvements which resulted in approval by the safety department of a key customer
- Customized overseas versions including Japanese labeling and a European version with 380/220V power for the auxiliary equipment to ensure single point power and grounding for the whole test cell.
Field results over the years have proven to be tremendous. Service costs have been lower with better protection from power disturbances and faster installations. Operational problems with the TEAL have been rare, and when they did occur, the documentation from TEAL allowed for quick resolution with little disruption.
The TEAL Power Management Program has benefited the Megatest Division in many ways, including:
- By out sourcing their power needs to TEAL, the Megatest Division was able to keep their engineers focused on developing the next generation tester, cutting their time to market.
- Better reliability results in lower service costs and higher customer satisfaction.
- Installation costs are reduced due to easier electrical hookups and dual output voltages.
